We met her in Operation: Annihilate! She carried a tricorder, and beamed down with Kirk's landing party when they first came to Deneva. Kirk ordered her to provide him with a complete transcription of everything that happened down there.
She is the only member of the landing party that isn't armed. She carried a tricorder and a communicator, that's it.
When the neural parasites attacked Kirk's party, she ducked and dodged like everybody else did. She didn't scream or do any other stupid, stereotypical girly garbage. She conducted herself bravely and professionally.
When Kirk and Spock shot down a parasite, and they came close to look at it, she blurted out, "Captain, it doesn't even look real!"
Yeoman Jamal was on the bridge (presumably to give Kirk the transcript he'd asked for) at the time that the delirious Mr. Spock came and tried to seize the controls. Both she and the alarmed Lieutenant Uhura quite reasonably held back and stayed out of the fray as the men all strove to subdue Spock.
