What If Spock Were A Woman?

by Laura Goodwin

What if Spock had been a woman? What if it was a half-human, half Vulcan *woman* who had been Captain Kirk's science officer and special "friend"?

WHAT IF...In Enemy Within, Kirk acted Like This with Spockette?

WHAT IF...In What Are Little Girls Made Of? Kirk realized he had a chance to impress the android with a false idea that might alert his comrades to the danger among them, and started chanting to himself: "Mind your own business, Ms. Spockette! I'm sick of your half-breed interference!"

WHAT IF...In Naked Time, Spockette had been the one to tearfully confess that her feelings for Kirk made her feel ashamed?

WHAT IF...In Dagger Of The Mind, Spockette acted all surprised and jealous and Kirk acted all guilty when Helen Noel reminded Kirk that they had met before?

WHAT IF...In The Changeling Kirk grabbed a hold of Spockette and hugged her, and held her, and dragged her down the hall, and threw her up against the wall, and *still* held on to her, AND Spockette let him, and Kirk kept holding on LONG after there was any obvious need for it, AND Spockette let him, AND Kirk didn't simply let go but slowly relaxed his grip and let his hands slide sensuously alllllll the way down her arms before finally, reluctantly breaking contact?

WHAT IF...In Devil In The Dark, Kirk kept trying to create excuses to be alone with Spockette in the dark? What if Spockette got all anxious at the thought of being separated from Jim, and when she thought he was in peril, got all emotional and started screaming for Kirk to kill the beast that she previously wanted simply captured?

WHAT IF...In Amok Time, Spockette was the one who had dumped her spouse-to-be to return to the ship instead? What if she then embraced Kirk, and smiled at him (and Jim seemed to love it), and then they had run off together at the end?

WHAT IF...In This Side Of Paradise, Spockette acts guilty and Kirk is all surprised when Leila explains that she and Spockette have met before. Later, what if Kirk got all jealous and pissed off because he saw Spockette holding hands and acting all lovey-dovey with the woman? Then what if Kirk picked a big fight with Spockette to snap her out of it?

WHAT IF...In Shore Leave Kirk assumed it was Spockette who was giving him the backrub?

WHAT IF...In Requiem For Methuselah, at the end, Spockette very sneakily tip-toed over to the sleeping Captain Kirk, touched him to establish a telepathic link, then made him forget his latest infatuation with a different girl?

WHAT IF...In Menagerie *and* Amok Time, Spockette stole the Enterprise, and Kirk basically just forgave it both times?

WHAT IF...In Patterns Of Force, Spockette climbed up on Kirk's well-whipped back - at his invitation - and proceeded to sadistically prolong her stay up there? What if Kirk bore this torture patiently, and afterwards only praised her? What if all of it was unnecessary because they could have just moved the bunk and used it for a step-up?

WHAT IF...In Piece Of The Action, Spockette and Kirk dressed up in gangster garb for no obvious military reason and went joyriding in a stolen car together, apparently just for the fun of it?

WHAT IF...In Turnabout Intruder, Kirk told Spockette that she was closer to him than anyone else in the universe - and then they held hands (while he was in Lester's body)?

WHAT IF...Kirk let Spockette get away with murder all the freaking time?

WHAT IF...Spockette tolerated Kirk taking liberties that she would never accept with anyone else?

WHAT IF...Spockette didn't call anyone else by a nickname, but she called Kirk "Jim"?

WHAT IF...Kirk took Spockette with him everywhere, even when there was no good reason for her to be there? Even when having her along complicated things or increased the risk to all involved?

WHAT IF...Spockette and Kirk were always extra protective of each other, and extra concerned for each other's welfare - to such an extent that they readily risk their lives for each other's sake?

WHAT IF...Spockette had privately said to Kirk, "I have been, and always shall be, yours."?

WHAT IF...Kirk said of dead Spockette that he felt he had left his more noble half (in other words, his better half) on Genesis?

WHAT IF...Kirk had said to a top SF administrator that Spockette's immortal soul was as much his own responsibility as his own soul was?

WHAT IF...the only ship that really mattered to Kirk was his relationSHIP with Spockette?

I repeat... WHAT IF...In Amok Time, Spockette was the one who had dumped her spouse-to-be to return to the ship instead? What if she then embraced Kirk, and smiled at him (and Jim seemed to love it), and then they had run off together at the end?

What if it was "Spockette", a Vulcan woman, that Kirk loved better than everybody, and everybody knew it? What if Kirk and Spockette loved each other for decades, despite terrible trials? What if even Spockette's death couldn't keep them apart? What would we say about their relationship then?

And why do our assumptions change when we are talking about two men?
