The Women Of Star Trek: Roberta Lincoln

by Laura Goodwin

Roberta Lincoln: she's no dummy (Terri Garr)

Roberta Lincoln - profession: secretary. We met her in Assignment: Earth. She's a 20 year-old Earthwoman of 1968 who unknowingly became employed by extraterrestrial agents who were working undercover. Lincoln was hired by agents 347 and 201 in New York City. They were replaced by Gary Seven, who assumed she was agent 201 when he first met her.

Seven quickly realized his error. Ms. Lincoln, despite a high I.Q., was obviously completely clueless about her employer's spectacular secret. Seven (lied, and...) appealed to her sense of patriotism to convince her to stay and work with him. He showed her a phony CIA I.D. to convince her that he was working for the government.

At one point, Kirk and Spock burst into Seven's lair, acting for all the world like a couple of common thugs. Roberta Lincoln gave them the welcome they seemed to deserve: She challenged them, opposed them, called the police, and fought like a wildcat - calling them both jerks, when they roughly manhandled her.

She certainly went beyond the call of duty, there.

She later turned the tables, turning on Seven and demanding an explanation. He started to tell her the truth, then Kirk and Spock returned to the scene. She was a participant/witness as the final dramatic scene was played out.

At the end we are allowed to believe that Gary Seven and Roberta Lincoln go on to have other adventures together. I guess that means she becomes a secret agent, working with Gary Seven on his alien secret agent things.
