The Women Of Star Trek: Lt. Martha Landon

by Laura Goodwin

Lt. Martha Landon (Celeste Yarnall)

In The Apple, Kirk took a large landing party to the surface of Gamma Trianguli 6, and this young lady, Lt. Martha Landon, was a member of that party. She was one of the few who survived the ordeal there.

Landon and Chekov obviously had a full-blown passionate affair going on. They could barely focus on their duty, because they were so distracted by their lust for each other.

Early in the episode, immediately after one of the men was killed by a poisonous plant, Landon confided in Chekov that she was frightened. Chekov reassured her by reminding her that they were in a beautiful place that could be seen as a romantic setting.

Kirk (sharply, to Landon and Chekov): "I know you two find each other fascinating, but we are not here to conduct a field experiment in human biology!"

Chastened, the two tried to be serious and stay focused, but they really had a tough time. They snuck off later in the episode for a little huggin' and kissin', and a couple of the natives of the world saw them.

The people of that world knew nothing about sex. The holding/touching stuff was strictly forbidden by their God, Vaal. So when the native couple who had observed Landon/Chekov began to imitate them, they were sternly rebuked by the tribal chief.

Lt. Landon expressed concern about Vaal's people. She found it totally inconceivable that they knew nothing about sexual love.

This is one of several episodes that clearly showed that there were no regulations which forbade shipmates to cultivate relationships. Kirk's only complaint was about them slacking off on the job.

Landon was no slacker when the villagers attacked the landing party. She very ably and efficiently kicked the asses of TWO of Akuta's homicidal thugs. Even Kirk did no better!

Landon outranks Chekov, but clearly it wasn't an issue. Clearly, she's not a snob.
