We met Doctor Miranda Jones in Is There In Truth No Beauty? What kind of a doctor was she? A psychologist. But that was not her claim to fame.
Jones was a telepath, who had studied advanced mental techniques on Vulcan. She had been selected to join minds with the Medusan Ambassador, Kollos, which was both a great honor, and a possibly very dangerous task. Medusans are described as a species so hideously ugly that the mere sight of one can cause humans to go insane. Jones is in no danger from this, because she is blind.
Dr. Jones is madly adored by Larry Marvick, but Jones tells Marvick in no uncertain terms that she can NOT love him the way he wants her to. The only male Jones is really interested in turns out to be Kollos - a fact which drives Marvick murderously insane with jealousy.
All kinds of crazy shenanigans go on over this Kollos/Miranda thing. At one point, Spock tries to mentally connect with Kollos, while Kirk tries to "seduce" Jones, specifically to keep her distracted while Spock melds with Kollos. It's quite explicit in the episode that Kirk has a non-erotic ulterior motive. Kirk totally fails to interest Jones. He doesn't even get one lousy little kiss from her (nor does he honestly seem to really want one, to tell the truth - as Dr. Jones of course realizes).
Dr. Jones is basically totally cold to all of the men. She really only cares for her Medusan. She's never happy until the end of the episode, when she finally succeeds in joining minds with him fully.
