OK, I'll tell this story one last time, pretty much the way it was told to me. If it were a better story I wouldn't mind telling it again and again, but it's not, so this is it, the big eye tee.

My paternal granduncle died of heart failure a week before I was born and his name was John Tyler Kirk. In memory of him, and to create a place to send his monogrammed knick-knacks, it was decided I'd have the same initials in my name. "James" everybody agreed about, but my mother wanted to pick my middle name and she had a hard time making up her mind, so on my birth certificate the middle name was just left as T.

My mom forgot all about filling in the blank until I was registered for pre-school. By then I'd had chance to distinguish myself, and I think she was also having a bad day. At least I hope so. :) Not that I'd wish my mother any bad luck, but I did take a lot of teasing about it over the years, and even got in some fights over it. Ha, ha, very funny Ma!

In high school things turned around temporarily. It actually was considered interesting and unusual, and practically became an asset. My parents were the ones who got teased about it then! That's what's called tit-for-tat. :)

Since I began my career with the fleet I've just used the T. Some wise guy always digs it up out of my school records and ribs me about it, but not as frequently, lately. Maybe I'm finally getting a little respect!

Thanks for asking.

Jim

Greetings again, all.

Interesting anecdote, Jim. I also have experienced no small share of minor irritations associated with the peculiarities of my name.

Item one: filling in online forms is a frustrating event for me, since I am not allowed to leave the last name blank, nor does my family name fit into the standard field. I often am forced by necessity to adopt a nom de guerre, or to simply bypass the whole tedious process completely in a manner I will not detail.

Item two: It is not generally known that the names Vulcans use to identify themselves as individuals to non-Vulcans are actually nicknames of a rather personal sort. Normally only one's most intimate associates would employ these "pet names". It is a most unsettling experience at first to hear new acquaintances and even enemies addressing oneself in such a fashion, but I have learned that, in time, one can become inured to almost anything.

Respectfully Yours,
Mr. Spock

Which I'm sure bears only a surface resemblance to skullduggery and has nothing whatever to do with the recent mysterious orange marmalade shortage! ;)
