Doctor Janet Wallace, a widow. We met her in The Deadly Years. What kind of a doctor is she? She's an endocrinologist.
Dr. Wallace came aboard the Enterprise when a radiation-induced hyperaccelerated aging disease struck several Gamma Hydra Four colonists. The same disease infected several of the Enterprise crew members, including Captain Kirk.
She and James Kirk had apparently been romantically involved in the past, but they decided to go their separate ways due to conflicting career concerns (gee, where did we hear that excuse before?). She later met and married Dr. Theodore Wallace, a man 26 years her senior, when they were working on a project together on planet Aldebaran III.
Wallace to Kirk: "Be a little less the cool, efficient Captain, and a little more the old friend."
Kirk doesn't apparently see any advantage in starting up again with Wallace. Although she comes onto him pretty strong, everything he says and does in return seems calculated to discourage her.
In any case, Dr. Wallace does finally quit mooning hopelessly over Kirk long enough to be useful in concocting a cure for the mysterious affliction.
