The Women Of Star Trek: Jamie Finney

by Laura Goodwin

Jamie Finney - Kirk's namesake

Jamie Finney is Lt. Cmdr Ben Finney's daughter. At the beginning of Court Martial, she confronts Captain Kirk, claims that he hated her father all his life, and then hysterically starts calling him a murderer. She's TOTALLY UNCOOL.

What's so interesting and richly ironic about this emotional scene is that Jamie was named after Jim Kirk by her dad! That's right, folks! Ben Finney named his daughter after Jim!

Gee whiz! Jim's all, your father was my friend!, and she's all you hated him, you killed him! - and she's his namesake, for cryin' out loud! WHAT is UP with THAT?

There is certainly much more than the usual amount of weirdness associated with this case. I mean, Ben and Jim were such good friends that he named his daughter after Jim, then Jim reported a mistake that Ben made, and Ben became convinced that the fact that his career stalled was because of that, and so he stews in his juice and plots revenge, ultimately deciding to frame Kirk for his own faked death to punish him - all while raising a daughter that he named after the guy - and Kirk is happily oblivious all the while that Finney harbors any hard feelings... how deep was their "friendship", REALLY?

Seriously, WHAT is UP with THAT? It's all just ~too weird for words~.
