The Women Of Star Trek: Droxine

by Laura Goodwin

Droxine, Stratos-dweller (Diana Ewing)

Ardana had one major city, Stratos, and Stratos was Droxine's home town. She was a privileged cloud-dweller, born and bred.

Droxine was the pampered, adored daughter of Plasus, the high-muckymuck of Ardana. Although apparently intelligent and able, she was one of the very few TOS women who had no job. She lived a life of idle pleasure, and was happily ignorant about the misery of the Troglytes, who were laboring in the hellhole zenite mines on the planet's surface.

She had heard about Vulcans, but had never met one until she met Mr. Spock. She was very impressed by Spock, and she wasted no time in trying to ingratiate herself with him. In one scene they had a very interesting conversation in which she expressed frank curiosity about Vulcan sexuality, and Mr. Spock's sexuality in particular. Spock seemed to be flattered, and he encouraged her a little.

Spock actually seemed to be attracted to Droxine, but nothing came of it. Spock had a big problem with the fact that she was turning a blind eye to the suffering and desperation of the rebellious miners. By episode's end, Spock had managed to convince Droxine to take an interest in the Troglyte's struggle. She seemed to agree at last that protective gas masks for the miners was appropriate, but beyond that, she promised to go to the mines in person, to more perfectly enlighten herself about the horrible conditions there. We are allowed to assume that she might ultimately decide to become an activist on the miner's behalf.
