While Kirk and Spock are hobnobbing with leaders of the oppressed Zeons, their resistance cell is apparently invaded by Daras, the gorgeous young high-ranking Nazi woman seen early in the episode in a newsreel. She shoots Zeon leader Abrom. Kirk and Spock overpower and disarm her, but then they learn that Daras is really a member of the underground, a friendly Ekosian MOLE. The "shooting" was staged to test Kirk and Spock.
Daras earned an iron cross (second class) and became a "Hero of the Fatherland" by betraying her own father. It was her father's idea. Daras managed to successfully infiltrate the Ekosian Nazis by virtue of this heartrending gambit.
Daras is obviously a very courageous and skillful spy, as well as a woman of clear vision and strong passions. She willingly risks everything she loves, and is, in the struggle against the Nazi movement on Ekos.
Daras agreed to help Kirk, Spock and Isak get past the Ekosian guards, so they can confront "Fuhrer" John Gill. They pose as members of a Gestapo film crew who are doing a documentary about Daras, and in this manner make their way into the headquarters.
At the end, the Ekosians and Zeons, we assume, will now unite in peace, and work together. We are also left to assume that Daras will play a leadership role (perhaps THE leadership role) in the new order.
FWIW, Daras never showed the slightest erotic interest in either Kirk or Spock, which is good, because neither one of them showed any interest in her, either. This is particularly noteworthy, because she is a beautiful dame who is well established to be heroic, smart, and noble - therefore she is (you'd think) perfectly suitable. Why neither Kirk nor Spock ever showed the slightest interest in her - nor she in them - is a mystery that to this day remains unexplained!
