In Whom Gods Destroy, this interesting conversation occurs:

"My first visit to Axanar was as a new-fledged cadet on a peace mission..." |

"Peace mission! Politicians and weaklings!" Garth mocks. |

"They were humanitarians and statesmen, and they had a dream..." |
Kirk is trying to awaken Garth's slumbering sense of decency.

"A dream that became a reality, and spread throughout the stars." |

"A dream that made Mr. Spock and me..." |
"...brothers!" |
Kirk seems to reject the first word that came to mind.

(Garth sees the look that passes between Kirk and Spock...) |

(...and reacts with shock! He decides to question Spock.) |

"Mr. Spock: Do you consider Captain Kirk and yourself brothers?" |
Garth senses that this is a sensitive point, and decides to press it.

"Captain Kirk speaks somewhat figuratively..." Spock replies carefully. |

"...and with undue emotion", Spock can't help but add... |

"However", Spock continues, "What he says is logical..." |
Spock seems to be mildly rebuking Kirk for being too obvious.

"...and I do, in fact, agree with it!" Spock improbably concludes. |

Garth declares, "Captain Kirk is your commanding officer!" |

"You are his subordinate, and that is all!" he scoffs. |
"What's so slashy about that?", you may wonder. Well, it's like this: If they are just friends, then why don't they just say so? Brothers are more than friends, they are family. As Spock points out, they obviously aren't literally brothers, but DAMN NEAR.
Kirk and McCoy are friends. That's what "just friends" looks like.
Roddenberry coined the word "T'hy'la" as a word to label Spock's relationship with Kirk, obviously because the term "friend" isn't accurate. "Friend" isn't complete enough, and obviously "brothers" doesn't quite cut it, either. Comrades, friends, "brothers"...Kirk and Spock are all of these things to each other, and more. What more is there? According to Gene Roddenberry, T'hy'la is a Vulcan word which means friend/brother/lover. The word was needed, because no English word means ALL of these things.
