We meet Doctor Ann Mulhall in Return to Tomorrow. What kind of a doctor is she? She's an astrobiologist. She was a member of the landing party to a strange dead world, where three non-corporeal super-beings lived. Dr. Mulhall bravely volunteered to allow her body to house Thalassa, one of the beings encountered there.
Thalassa - wife of Sargon. Thalassa is one of three incredibly powerful non-corporeal beings who survived for millenia in glowing balls that were some sort of canister. Thalassa, Sargon, and Henoch temporarily occupied the bodies of Dr. Ann Mulhall, Jim Kirk, and Spock (initially, with their consent) so that they could build android bodies to house their spirits in.
Once in their borrowed bodies, the three super-beings realized that they loved having physical bodies again, and they became reluctant to give them up.
Thalassa and Sargon were betrayed by Henoch, and they subsequently realized that the temptations to abuse their superior powers inside a living body were too great. Sargon and Thalassa defeated Henoch, with Kirk and crew's help, and (after one last kiss) she and her husband opted to abandon their borrowed bodies and face oblivion together.
In this episode we see Ann Mulhall and Jim Kirk acting quite sappy and lovey-dovey with each other. There's lots of heterosexual-looking behavior - hugs, kisses, words of love - but it's totally, explicitly obvious that it's really Thalassa and Sargon at the time. Once Sargon and Thalassa have flown, Mulhall and Kirk snap back to their usual selves and resume their utterly professional relationship.
