Years later, they started showing Star Trek reruns every day after school. I was a little older and more mature, and I began to notice that Spock sometimes behaves very strangely. He wasn't always such a huge hero: sometimes he made mistakes, or did bad things. And Captain Kirk isn't a proper classic hero, either. He does unexpected and sometimes inexplicable things. Then I read somewhere that Roddenberry deliberately designed them that way. He thought imperfect heroes were more interesting than perfect ones.

Some feminist types complained that all the girlfriends Kirk and Spock had got dumped - or worse, killed off - and that this sent a very negative message to girls and women who were watching. Lots of people thought it was shady that Kirk and Spock often seemed to really not like women ~at all~. But defenders just explained that they were single-mindedly devoted to their duty, and just didn't have time for love affairs or marriage.

I'll never forget the day I ran into some fanfiction that put forth the outrageous proposition that Kirk and Spock were Gay, and in love with each other. I naturally thought the idea was ridiculous, and put it completely out of my mind. But the idea came back to haunt me, and, just to prove to myself that those people were crazy, that it was impossible, I started watching the old reruns more carefully.
Funny thing...the more carefully I watched, the more it began to seem that those crazy people were right. Kirk and Spock *do* love each other more than they love anyone else. Their primary relationship *is* with each other. And there were other, even more alarmingly suggestive things that I began to notice... things I can't believe I never noticed before. It took a while, but I adjusted to the idea. So, Kirk and Spock are Gay, and always have been? Well, come to think of it, it ~does~ explain an awful lot!
